Interval training is a training method in sports that is characterised by alternating load and recovery phases (intervals). The duration and intensity of the recovery phases are designed in such a way that the organism cannot fully recover. The incomplete recovery is intended to provide a strong training stimulus.
Depending on the type of training, interval training aims to improve strength endurance, speed endurance, lactate tolerance, lactate decomposition, maximum oxygen uptake or the feeling of speed (e.g. competition speed). Furthermore, interval training can contribute to the improvement and economisation of movement sequences (inter- and intramuscular coordination).
These training goals are important for many sports, so this form of training is widely used.
